Robert Shepherd
After graduating with a 2:1 degree in Three Dimensional Design from Art College in 1991, I began my career designing exhibits and spaces for Techniquest, a hands-on science centre in Cardiff. By the late 1990s, I transitioned into education, where I taught Design and Technology in secondary schools.
Throughout my professional life—whether in design or education—I have maintained a strong personal interest in architectural illustration. Drawing and illustrating buildings has been a creative outlet that allowed me to recharge while working in demanding environments. My progression into senior leadership roles within education was rewarding, but it also meant spending less time teaching and more time in meetings. As a result, I made the decision to return to my architectural roots and refocus my career on architectural illustration.
My work centres on producing detailed, to-scale 2D and 3D illustrations. I particularly enjoy working with ink and graphite to explore tone, texture, and contrast, highlighting the unique qualities of different building materials, surfaces, and forms. I am passionate about documenting a wide variety of architectural styles—from terraced houses and industrial sites to pubs and churches—and aim to capture the character and context of each structure.
In recent years, I have also explored digital architectural illustration. Notably, in 2019, I produced a 3D map of The Wave in Coventry, which is still featured on their website (https://thewavecoventry.com/about-us/). This project was a particular point of pride, although my primary focus remains traditional illustration techniques.
Looking ahead, I aim to raise the profile of my work through increased online presence and local exhibitions, with the goal of securing new commissions. I believe that membership in the Society of Architectural Illustration would offer valuable opportunities to develop professionally, connect with a wider audience, and gain greater recognition for my work.
