Dominic Berry, MSAI
After leaving school in the late 80’s I worked as a scenic sculptor working exclusively in polystyrene, on television programmes and advertisements building large and dramatic props for television productions. Taking myself to art school a few years later, and subsequently university, I trained as a modelmaker and after graduating worked on television shows, commercials and pop promos (music videos), Brits ‘96 and ’97. Clients were some of the biggest name in the industry, (Bee Gees, Simply Red, The Spice Girls, ACDC, Tina Turner and Michael Jackson).
In 1999 I retrained as a secondary art teacher, retiring in 2023 as Head of Art at St.Swithuns School, Winchester. I have since become a professional artist and although I thoroughly enjoy working in a variety of media, I love producing drawings of properties using a pen technique that I have developed since 2004; namely using fineliner to describe form through accuracy of tone with the majority of marks made in vertical line. My biggest influence has been Turner, but not his well-known paintings, instead I look to his many travel sketchbooks and adore his use of limited pencil line to accurately record his observations, and suggestive hatchings for tonal descriptions.
